Nurse Practitioner Julie Kircher on Providing Prenatal Care to Redwood Falls and Beyond

Julie Kircher NP ACMC Redwood FallsAs ACMC-Redwood Falls nurse practitioner Julie Kircher gears up for her day, she’s happy to see her first appointment is with one of her prenatal patients, a first-time mom in for her 12-week obstetrics visit.  She’ll meet with the mom-to-be for a complete physical and consultation and to answer any questions her patient may have. Working with pregnant moms is one of the things she loves most about her practice.

When she first began her nursing career, Julie worked for 16 years in a hospital setting. Though she rotated from department to department, her favorite area to work in was labor and delivery.

Caring for OB Patients in the Community

When Julie went back to school to become a nurse practitioner, she didn’t realize just how much she’d miss caring for pregnant patients. When she began her practice at ACMC in Redwood Falls as a family medicine nurse practitioner in 2013, she was excited to incorporate prenatal care.

“It’s a different way for me to care for and interact with obstetrics patients. Instead of caring for them during their hospital stay, I get to see them throughout their pregnancy,” Julie said. “I love getting to be a part of that.”

Julie works alongside ACMC-Redwood Falls family medicine physicians who care for obstetric patients. She shares care for OB patients with Dr. Michelle Cilek, Dr. Joshua Friese, Dr. Gregory McCallum, Dr. Alan Olson and Dr. David Danielson during their obstetric visits. Patients not only see one of these doctors, but Julie as well throughout their pregnancy.

“Because I share in their prenatal care, our patients get access to two medical professionals when they need to talk with someone. We hope this gives them the best-all-around experience during their pregnancy,” she said.

And as a mom herself, she understands that pregnancy can be both exciting and scary at the same time.

“I think everyone should know that when you’re pregnant, it’s normal to have a lot of questions and concerns. Part of that is making sure our patients know they can reach out to us at any point during their pregnancy, not just when they’re at the clinic for one of their scheduled visits,” Julie said.

Comprehensive Prenatal Care in Redwood Falls

Though Julie doesn’t deliver babies, she has been a labor coach for some of the moms-to-be who are nervous about the delivery process.

“It’s pretty amazing to be a part of that, knowing they trust me enough to want me to be in the delivery room when they already have the care of one of our physicians,” Julie said. “We’re very fortunate in Redwood Falls to have such a great group of doctors. That’s why it’s always such an honor when they want me to be a part of it, too.”

Julie Kircher NP ACMC Redwood FallsHaving worked at Redwood Area Hospital and ACMC, Julie knows first-hand just how impressive the care provided to obstetrics patients in the community is—from the healthcare team down to the resources available to patients. Patients don’t have to leave the community to receive the care they need during their pregnancies. From ultrasounds to prenatal care and labor and delivery to c-sections, everything a woman with a healthy pregnancy needs is available in Redwood Falls.

“Pregnancy is such an exciting time in a woman’s life. Being there throughout the pregnancy journey is truly the most rewarding thing I have ever experienced working in medicine,” she said.

She adds, “If I can offer our patients one piece of advice—other than what they hear from me in their appointments—it’s to enjoy their pregnancy. It’s so easy to get caught up in a whirlwind of to-dos that you don’t take the time to slow down and just live in the moment.”
