Small Town Medicine Gives Big Rewards

Arthur Rillo, MD, ACMC Granite Falls

Arthur J. Rillo, MD, Family Medicine, ACMC-Granite Falls

Small town gives big rewards to Dr. Arthur Rillo who is a family medicine physician at ACMC-Granite Falls.  Dr. Rillo has been with ACMC since 1997 and finds comfort in being a part of a smaller community where he treats generations of family members from birth to the elderly.

Seeking a new direction

I came to Granite Falls in 1997 from a small town in North Dakota where I was practicing medicine.  I found ACMC through my sister who suggested that I come and take a look at what they had to offer.  So my wife and I ventured to Minnesota and found that ACMC was recruiting for physicians in Willmar, New London and Granite Falls.  We toured each of the communities and we just really liked Granite Falls; we fell in love with the town and the people and thought it would be a great place to raise our family.  The other thing that attracted us to ACMC was their retirement program and benefits.  I knew that I wanted to work hard for a period of time and then be able to retire comfortably.

Practicing medicine at ACMC is very different than where I came from in North Dakota.  Where I was, there wasn’t a lot of support and so being in a multi-specialty clinic like ACMC where the support is really good was a nice change.  If I need any assistance from the different specialties, they are just a phone call away. Another big plus for me is that I can practice medicine and not have to worry about the politics or the business side of things.

We toured each of the communities and we just really liked Granite Falls; we fell in love with the town and the people and thought it would be a great place to raise our family.

My practice in Granite Falls

My patient load has a broad scope, which is what you look for as a family medicine physician.  I see patients from birth to death and everything in between.  I didn’t always do OB, we started doing OB  here about 11 years ago.  At first I was just supporting OB, but then we got really busy as there was a great need and I’ve been doing it ever since.  We have a steady number of deliveries each year and we are able to do C-Sections as well.  Our call schedule is very minimal as the local hospital contracts out for ER coverage, so we do back-up call one weekend out of every five.  During the week we are on call one out of every three days, but it’s mostly by phone.  We go to the hospital in the event of a trauma and do admissions at the end of the clinic day.

An outsider might think that moving to a smaller town to practice medicine will limit the technology available to them but that isn’t the case when you are in the ACMC system.  We have the latest and greatest in technology and access to a wide variety of specialists that help us to meet the needs of our patients.

Strength in community

We have a strong physician group in Granite Falls. We have two brothers that have practiced medicine here for a long time and because we are a small town, it makes practicing medicine here much more personal.  After you have been here for an extended period of time, you get to know kids, parents, grandparents and take care of the whole family; it’s more community-like.  As my four children are now all in school and our family gets more involved, it’s fun for me to go to activities and see the children that I have delivered as they are growing up; I sit back and watch them and think that’s pretty cool!

I try to be involved in the community as much as I can; I served on the school board for eight years and stay involved in other school activities and church.  I help out with Track & Field in the spring and the coaching staff is always happy to see me in the stands during a football game in case something happens.  In my free time I like to golf.  I play in a men’s league and like to take my family out on the course as well.

I was looking for a place where I would be able to practice a broad scope of medicine; being in Granite Falls and working at ACMC I can do just that.  We are glad to call Granite Falls home!

Do you have a great story to share about Dr. Rillo? We’d like to hear from you.
