What is an Ambulatory Surgery Center?

ACMC-Marshall Surgery CenterForty-five years ago, the first ambulatory surgery center (ASC) was established in Phoenix, Ariz., by two physicians who wanted to provide more timely, convenient and comfortable surgical services for their patients.

Today there are more than 5,300 ASCs in the United States, and they perform 23 million surgeries annually. Willmar Surgery Center and the ACMC-Marshall Surgery Center are just two of these surgical centers bringing quality care close to home.

That’s exactly what ACMC set out to do in 1986 with the addition of the Willmar Surgery Center (WSC), a joint venture between ACMC and Rice Memorial Hospital and the ACMC-Marshall Surgery Center last year. Though the surgery center broke ground in October 2013 and took occupancy of the building in August 2014, the first surgery was performed this January.

What is an Ambulatory Surgery Center?

An ambulatory surgery center is a same-day surgery center, offering diagnostic and preventive surgical procedures such as colonoscopies, ear tubes, laparoscopy and many more procedures.  For most patients, the entire stay, including surgery and recovery, is less than three hours. Specialties at the ACMC-Marshall Surgery Center include:

  • Anesthesia
  • Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat)
  • GI Endoscopy
  • Gynecology
  • General Surgery
  • Opthalmology (Eye)
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Podiatry
  • Urology

“Life is busy. We understand that. That’s why we do everything possible to make a patient’s stay at our surgery center personal, comfortable, convenient and uncomplicated,” said Andy Mitlyng, RN and surgery center manager.

Designed exclusively for outpatient surgical procedures like the WSC, the ACMC-Marshall Surgery Center provides pediatric and adult care centered on patient needs. Our team consists of board certified surgeons and anesthetists, RNs and medical technicians specializing in surgical and recovery care. ACMC-Marshall Surgery Center includes two operating suites, two endoscopic suites, private pre- and post-operative recovery areas and consultation and support space.

“We’re excited to bring this service to the Marshall area, giving our patients expanded access to surgical care,” Andy said. “Caring for the health of our patients when they need us most is what we do best.”
